IMAGE RESTITUTION, The Film Week, NUST, Windhoek 13.3.2026

IMAGE RESTITUTION was completed after a three year working process and presented for final assessment to a Namibian audience at the Film Week in Windhoek, organized by the Namibian Film Commission. There was an audience discussion following the screening.

IMAGE RESTITUTION deals first and foremost with the legacy of colonialism and genocide in Namibia and demonstrates how revisiting this trauma can be essential in moving forward in a more positive direction. This screening inspired a profound emotional response. Some audience members worried that concentrating on the traumatic aspects of Namibian history might overshadow a more positive and hopeful perspective. A young white German-Namibian expressed surprise that there were no historical graphic depictions of the genocide featured in the film. The audience also wondered about the practicalities that go into making a film like this, particularly how the project was funded. The fact that IMAGE RESTITUTION was financed through visual arts funding rather than traditional film funding reveals more about the versatility of the film, and particularly documentary, medium.

Q & A moderated by Sophie Haikali with the directors Mwalengwa Hillebrecht and Laura Horelli and the participants Samuel Amunkete, Mildred Ford, Kuzajatu X Maamberua, Dudley Tuwelo (D-33T), Lekenanda Eliakim, Ralph Ntelamo.
